Sjef Voets (1956)
K gezaagd (1990)
wood, ca. 158 x 100 x 55
How do you think this sculpture was made?
Wood is the great love of artist Sjef Voets. In this material he searches for a form that can carry the meaning of the sculpture. From above, the letter "K" is most clearly visible and the shape continues downward. The hand-made, straight lines of the letter merge into the natural grain, cracks and fissures of the wood. Voets shows us the properties of wood, but stays close to the form, which is paled by the character of the wood. Voets' sculptures are often accompanied by a sketch or collage; opposite the sculpture hangs the corresponding photograph (cibachrome).
