What do you see in this painting?
For Van Vught, paint is a means of exploring and giving solid form to the developing, flowering and decaying phases of life. When the surface of the painting is dry, he pours paint onto the canvas. Then he places plants on top, puts the whole thing through a press and repeats the pressing process until depth is created in the work. Whatever the shapes represent—lilies, mushrooms or fungi?—the subjects give an impression of nature. Van Vught likes to emphasize the making process and experiments with techniques such as spraying, pouring, scraping, pressing, watering and cracking.
