What do you think when you see these images?
According to Van de Ven, in spite of the precise registration of the camera, a photograph is never a representation of reality. Imagination and interpretation always play a role. Her work refers to press photography and social themes. In this work she examines the relationship between journalistic photography, reality and imagination. This is threefold: the imaging of a photographer, of a photo editor and of the viewer. Van de Ven quietly comments on press photography by letting the viewer discover for themselves what is going on. These photographs were taken in the Middle East, where photography is deliberately used by warring factions as a tool in the depiction of conflict in that region.
