The University Medical Center Utrecht was designed by EGM Architects in the 1980s. Typical for the design of healthcare facilities at that time was the inclusion of art in the floors, walls and spaces of the building. Combining art and architecture strengthens the qualities of the building and helps merge building concept, colours and art into one. When completed, the UMC Utrecht had 28 works of art created by 18 artists (see nos. 1 and 4).
One of these artists is Herman Kuijer. He created several series of hanging panels for the three skylights. The panels are filled with sound-absorbing material. The colours of the panels change subtly over the course of the day as light enters through the roof. The north-south position of the building in the landscape was the artist's starting point.
