Why are these photos hanging so close together?
UMC Utrecht commissioned artist Albert van Westing to create a series of photographs for the corridor leading to the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital. The series shows the contrast between nature 'in the city' (the flower store) and nature 'of the country' (an estate near the UMC Utrecht). This contrast can be seen in format, color and editing. The digital color photos of flowers from the flower store hang next to analogue shots of landscapes done in black and white. The flowers are close-up photos in square format. The landscapes are coarse-grained photographs, taken from afar, in a rectangular format. To further emphasize the contrast, they are hung with little spacing to create a slightly alienating effect.
