Ab van Hanegem (1960)
no title (1993)
acrylic paint on canvas, 240 x 360 cm
What kind of space is this comic book hero in?
Ab van Hanegem uses various painting and air-brush techniques to create large, confusing spaces. He creates shapes like circles and grid patterns to construct optical illusions. It seems as if after painting a grid on the canvas, the artist continues with the grid inside the canvas. In this work, comic book hero Popeye appears. Popeye seems to throw his spinach into the image - this is how Van Hanegem plays with the prevailing rules of perspective and spatial illusion.
