Rabi Koria (1988-2022)
Inherent Resolve, side 4 (2018)
mixed media, ceramics, 135 x 120 cm
Rabi Koria was of Syrian descent and immigrated to the Netherlands as a five-year-old. His work tells of the search for his identity, which lies somewhere between these two worlds. The painted tile tableaux are inspired by ancient ceramic tiles from Damascus. The mostly abstract forms refer to stories from the Middle East. The work evokes associations with writing, calligraphy and carpet motifs. It won him the Royal Prize for Free Painting in 2015.
